More Than a Senior Portrait: Capturing Who They Are Before the Next Chapter Begins
The dog. The guitar. The saxophone. The proud parents. Because senior photos should tell the whole story.
There’s something pretty incredible about senior year.
One minute, you’re taking pictures of your little one on their first day of kindergarten, backpack nearly bigger than they are.
And somehow, just like that, you’re planning senior pictures, talking about graduation and wondering where on earth the time went.
For seniors, it’s an exciting season filled with possibilities.
For parents?
It’s exciting too. But let’s be honest, there’s usually a little nostalgia mixed in.
That’s one of the reasons I absolutely love photographing high school seniors.
Because senior portraits aren’t just about celebrating graduation. They’re about capturing who someone is right now, before everything begins to change.
Bring the Dog. Bring the Guitar. Bring Whatever Makes You, You.
One of my favorite things about senior photography is incorporating the things that make each person unique.
Maybe you’ve spent years playing guitar.
Maybe the saxophone has been part of your life since middle school.
Maybe your dog has been your constant companion through every wonderful, awkward teenage year.
Bring them along!
Some of my favorite senior photographs happen when we incorporate something personal.
A guitar slung over a shoulder can create a photograph with a completely different personality.
A saxophone offers opportunities for interesting compositions and artistic lighting.
And dogs?
Anyone who knows me knows I’m always happy to have a dog join the party.
They might not always cooperate. They might get distracted or decide sniffing everything is much more interesting than looking at my camera.
And honestly? That’s part of the fun.

The goal isn’t to create photographs that look like everyone else’s. It’s to create images that feel unmistakably yours.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
Some seniors arrive feeling completely confident.
Others are nervous, unsure what to do with their hands or convinced they’re going to look awkward in every photograph.
I’ve got you.
I’ll help find flattering angles, suggest natural movements and provide direction along the way.
We might walk around, lean against a tree, sit on a rock or incorporate whatever you’ve brought to the session.
We’ll capture some classic portraits where you’re looking directly at the camera.
But I also love the in-between moments.
The genuine smile.
The unexpected laughter.
That relaxed expression that appears when you stop thinking about having your picture taken.
Those are often everyone’s favorite photographs.
A Little Something for Mom and Dad
There’s one more thing I love to do during senior sessions.
And this one is especially for the parents.
I always try to take a few minutes to photograph the senior with Mom, Dad or both.
It doesn’t have to be a big production.
Maybe Mom jumps in for a quick hug.
Maybe Dad puts his arm around his son or daughter.
Maybe we get a fun, laughing photograph with both parents.
Because here’s the thing.
Your teenager might be focused on graduation, college, careers and everything exciting that lies ahead.
But you remember the little kid who used to reach for your hand.
The first day of school.
The soccer games.
The music lessons.
The birthdays that somehow seemed to come faster every year.
And now you’re standing next to someone who’s almost an adult.
That’s a pretty big deal.
I love giving parents the opportunity to be part of these photographs.
Not because we’re turning the senior session into a family photo shoot, but because it’s a milestone for the whole family.
Sometimes it’s just five minutes.
A quick hug. A genuine laugh. A photograph together.
And someday, that might be one of the images you treasure most.
A Session That Feels Like You
I don’t believe every senior session should look the same.
Some seniors love dramatic mountain backdrops and Colorado sunsets.

Others prefer urban settings or something more understated.
Some show up with multiple outfits, instruments and a long list of ideas.
Others just want a few great photographs that feel natural.
I love working with all of them.
Before the session, we can talk about locations, clothing, interests and the overall look you’re hoping to achieve.
I’ll guide the process and make sure we capture a variety of images, from classic portraits to something more creative.
The most important thing is that when you look through your photographs, you recognize yourself.
Before the Next Chapter Begins
Senior year has a funny way of making everyone realize how quickly time moves.
Soon, there will be graduation ceremonies, celebrations, new adventures and probably a few happy tears.
The dog will still be waiting at the door.
The guitar might be packed for college.
The saxophone might become part of a new musical adventure.
And Mom and Dad?
They’ll still be wondering how their little kid grew up so quickly.
That’s why senior photographs matter.
They capture personality, confidence, interests, relationships and a moment in life that deserves to be remembered.
Let’s Make Your Senior Photos Something Special
Whether you’re bringing your favorite instrument, your four-legged best friend or simply showing up ready for beautiful photographs, I’d love to create a session that’s uniquely yours.
I’ll help with the location, lighting, posing and all the little details.
You bring your personality.
And Mom and Dad?
Don’t wander too far. I’m probably going to pull you into a few photographs before we’re done.
Trust me. You’ll be glad we did.
With love,
Shelly
