Just the Two of Us: A Romantic Colorado Mountain Elopement

An intimate ceremony, breathtaking mountain views and a love story that needed nothing more than two people choosing each other.

There’s something incredibly romantic about the idea of escaping to the mountains with the person you love.

No elaborate production.

No long guest list.

No pressure to follow traditions that don’t necessarily feel like you.

Just the two of you, surrounded by the beauty of Colorado, promising to spend your lives together.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a Colorado couple who wanted exactly that.

They had decided to self-solemnize their marriage, exchanging their vows without an officiant leading the ceremony.

And honestly?

It was one of those experiences that reminded me just how beautiful simplicity can be.

Your Wedding. Your Story. Your Way.

One of the wonderful things about getting married in Colorado is that couples can legally solemnize their own marriage.

That opens the door to some incredibly meaningful possibilities.

A quiet ceremony overlooking the mountains.

An intimate exchange of vows beside a beautiful lake.

A sunrise celebration surrounded by towering pine trees.

Or simply finding a peaceful place where the two of you can be completely present with each other.

For this particular couple, the vision was simple.

They wanted a beautiful mountain setting, an intimate exchange of vows and photographs that captured the romance of the moment without making the experience feel staged.

They wanted their wedding day to feel like them.

And I loved that.

It All Started with a Conversation

Before their elopement, we scheduled a Zoom call so we could talk through everything together.

And when I say everything, I mean everything.

We discussed their vision, the type of scenery they were dreaming about, the atmosphere they wanted to create and how they imagined the ceremony unfolding.

We talked about timing, lighting, the photography experience and how I could best support them.

I love these conversations because they give me an opportunity to understand what matters most to each couple before we ever meet.

They also give my clients a chance to get to know me, ask questions and feel confident that we’re on the same page.

I never want someone to arrive at their wedding photography session wondering what happens next.

Finding the Perfect Mountain Backdrop

Once I understood their vision, I helped them choose a gorgeous Colorado mountain location that would complement their ceremony.

Colorado certainly knows how to deliver when it comes to romantic scenery.

For me, selecting a photography location is about more than finding a pretty background.

I’m thinking about lighting, the direction of the sun, the surrounding landscape, accessibility and opportunities to create a variety of beautiful images.

I want the location to enhance the story, not distract from it.

And on this particular day, the mountain setting was absolutely stunning.

A Photographer Who Knows When to Step Back

During our Zoom call, I explained something about my approach that is especially important for intimate weddings.

My role is a blend of being a fly on the wall and providing thoughtful direction when it’s helpful.

There are moments when I want couples to forget I’m even there.

When they’re exchanging vows, holding hands or sharing an emotional moment, I don’t want to interrupt by constantly telling them where to stand.

I want those moments to unfold naturally.

I quietly observe, anticipate and capture the little details that tell the story.

But there are also moments when a little guidance makes all the difference.

That’s when I shift into a more hands-on approach.

I’ll suggest beautiful light, help position a couple against the scenery or offer gentle prompts that encourage natural interaction.

Maybe I’ll ask them to walk together, hold each other close or simply enjoy the view.

I love creating photographs that feel romantic and cinematic without looking overly posed.

The balance is knowing when to offer direction and when to simply let the moment happen.

And Then, There Were the Vows

When the day arrived, we met at the mountain location we’d selected.

They were ready to exchange their vows, surrounded by incredible Colorado scenery.

There was something so beautiful about the simplicity of it all.

No audience to think about.

No elaborate timeline demanding their attention.

Just two people, completely focused on each other.

As they exchanged their vows, I gave them space to experience the moment while quietly capturing it through my lens.

Those are the moments I treasure as a photographer.

Once they had exchanged their promises, we took advantage of the beautiful setting to create a collection of romantic portraits.

A little gentle posing.

A little movement.

Some beautiful light.

And plenty of opportunities for them to simply enjoy being together.

It was intimate, stunning and wonderfully personal.

Exactly what they had envisioned.

Eloping Doesn’t Mean Your Photographs Have to Be an Afterthought

Sometimes couples assume that choosing an elopement means giving up beautiful wedding photography.

I couldn’t disagree more.

Intimate weddings can create incredible opportunities for photography.

Without a packed timeline or long list of formal portraits, there’s often more room to slow down, explore a beautiful location and focus on the connection between two people.

We can be intentional about lighting.

Take advantage of natural scenery.

Create a combination of candid moments and thoughtfully composed portraits.

And most importantly, allow the experience to feel relaxed rather than rushed.

Sometimes all you need is a beautiful place, a meaningful promise and someone who knows how to capture it.

A Little Planning Makes Room for the Magic

That Zoom call beforehand made such a difference.

We had already discussed the location, our photography approach and what mattered most to them.

They understood that I would offer direction when useful and give them space when the moment called for it.

And I understood the story they wanted their photographs to tell.

That preparation allowed us to relax into the experience.

Because when the important details are discussed ahead of time, there’s so much more room to enjoy the beautiful, unexpected moments.

Your Love Story Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s

I love photographing traditional weddings.

The celebration, the family, the dancing, the beautiful details and the emotion of having everyone together.

But there’s something equally special about an intimate elopement.

The quiet.

The simplicity.

The freedom to create a wedding day that feels completely personal.

For this couple, that meant standing together in a breathtaking mountain setting and making a promise that belonged entirely to them.

And I was honored to be there to capture it.
